Micron has officially announced plans to phase out DDR4 memory throughout 2025. Shipments will taper off over the next 6–9 months, marking the end of DDR4 production from the last major vendor. This move follows similar decisions by Samsung and SK Hynix, shifting their focus to faster, more profitable standards like DDR5, LPDDR5, and HBM.
Despite the transition, demand for DDR4 remains strong for legacy electronics, industrial systems, and cost-sensitive applications. Market prices surged by as much as 50% in May due to tightening supply. Micron expects supply constraints may make DDR4 more expensive than DDR5 in some cases.
Micron advises customers to upgrade to DDR5, while still offering limited DDR4 supply to critical industries like automotive, networking, and industrial applications where reliability is essential. Smaller vendors may attempt to fill the void, but concerns remain around quality, scalability, and consistent reliability.
